Strangers on a plane

Blog post: What is the problem in these scenarios in the readings you divided with your group members? Is there a solution offered? Use the TRIAC paragraph format and quote. Be sure to identify which reading you did.

What I am reading is Strangers on a Plane, and the main character is talking about is a girl and how she is afraid to fly and how she has an accent. one of the problems in the readings is that what she is saying that people judge her on how she looks and the way she looks, she also says that “Accent by itself is a shallow measure of language proficiency, the linguistic equivalent of judging people by their looks. Instead, we should become aware of our linguistic biases and learn to listen more deeply before forming judgments.” what she is explaining that when people have a different accent as each other, people tend to make judges against each other. Also, with people having an accent, “it can lead to real discrimination in job interviews, performance evaluations and access to housing, to name just a few of the areas where having or not having a certain accent has profound consequences.” there is basically no solution for people, but people need to get their act together.

  1. I read Digging in the Trash and our articles relate quite a bit. In my reading the author talks a lot of how people need to stop judging others based on their looks/ living situations because we are all the same people on the inside. People tend to make rash judgments due to stereotypes and social standards. Because of this people can be falsely labeled as something they are not.

  2. I agree! I actually read this article as well even though it was what we chose to use overall. You touched really well on the linguistic discrimination when the author makes a connection to how people discriminate each other based on their accent’s because it gives a precedence of their age group, their environment, and culture. It can rawly reveal a lot about a person. I think it would also be important the income stereotyping taking place here, it seems like in this story it’s occurring pretty heavily. This is a good start to the article “Strangers on a Plane”, Nice Job!

  3. This is showing the affects that the us vs them can have on our everyday life while mine talked about solutions for this problem. The whole talking it out before you make judgement on what you think the person would be like.
