Write a blog post in which you explore the 3 kinds of power that Andrews proposes as necessary to successful movements. Use a movement you know about or can imagine as an illustration. You can use the itgetsbetter.org movement by reading Savage in Emerging.
In Andrews article, he explains 3 different types of power for a social movement. The first power he expresses is cultural power. Its when people share public opinion, language, and behavior. Some of the ideas that the people brainstorm basically go nowhere. But forming a group and a community to at least try makes a statement in our society. Cultural power isn’t that easy though, its hard to change peoples attitudes and beliefs as they go along.
The second power that Andrews explains is disruptive power. This is more costly for people to join the status quo. For example, when people are on strike for better pay or work conditions, they have a chance for losing their jobs fully and not being able to work. usually, disruptive power causes counterattacks between its people. Jerry Jones was going to bench his players for protesting the national anthem, but before he was with protesting the national anthem.
Lastly, the third power is the organization power. People organize a protest so they can get a lot of people to join and and hope to start a movement and make a statement in what they want. This also has some risks, if people don’t show up to this or the police find out and shut this all down. A example is Ghandis protest and what he did. he organized all these people for civil disobedience “don’t fight back”
A movement I know is the Womens march. the Womens march is very important because they still want equal rights as men, and they are fighting for better rights. they gather tons of women with signs and posters.
